Search Engines
Google
The yardstick against which other search engines are measured. Google is the favorite of many
searchers & with good reason; the ranking system based upon site linkages works! The
Google Directory & News pages are also excellent resources.

Answers.com
"The world's greatest encyclodictionalmanacapedia" -- Answers.com is your one-step guide to
the initial research process, & often comprehensive enough for the research itself. It contains
only up-to-date, accurate definitions & explanations from authoritative sources. Best of all, with a
"cite" button next the copyrights at the bottom of each page, you'll be able to prepare a biblio-
graphy in a snap.

A9.com
Great for ongoing research projects! Keep a record of your search history, have sites
recommended to you based on previous searches & keep notes on your own online notepad.
A9 searches the Web using live.com, searches reference with answers.com, news with
live.com& accesses Wikipedia information. There is a "Web Booster" which gives you
suggestions for more extensive research options. There's even an
Amazon.com link which
gives you a list of books which fit your topic.

Ask.com
Provides "Smart Answers" right at the top of the search results. Offers one-click links to narrow
your search, expand your search, & provides links to results for related terms. Search for
images, news, maps & directions, local, weather, encyclopedias, dictionaries, blogs, & RSS
feeds. Contains fewer ads than
Google.

All the Web
This big, fast search engine has a new look with enhanced livesearch capabilities. Search for
PDF files, MS Word files & text within Flash files. There is also a searchable news database
which covers more than 3,000 web news sources.

Clusty.com
A search engine that organizes your search results into folders, putting similar items together.
You can also search news, images,
Wikipedia, blogs, & government pages.

Kartoo.com
If you're a visual learner, you'll love Kartoo! Kartoo is a metasearch engine which presents its
results on a map. Enter your request & click on the "OK" button. As soon as you launch a
search, Kartoo analyzes your request, questions the most relevant engines, selects the best
sites & places them on a map. In this map, the found sites are represented by more or less
important size pages, depending on their relevance. When you move the pointer over these
pages, the concerned keywords are illuminated & a bried description of the site appears on the
left side of the screen. A series of keywords appears. You can refine your search by clicking
subjects.

Exalead.com
This search engine is unique in providing a thumbnail view of each found site. It also provides
suggestions to refine your search.

DogPile.com
One of the best metasearch engines, DogPile presents your results in a very organized fashion.
Also includes audio, video, images, yellow & white pages.

Ixquick.com
"The world's most powerful metasearch engine" -- Search results are more comprehensive &
more accurate. Ixquick's unique capabilities include a "Universal Power Search," a global
search and "power refinement."

Yahoo.com
Yahoo is a directory rather than a typical search engine. This means that a human being has
assembled the links, not just a computer.

Ms.Dewey.com
Want a search engine with attitude? Ms. Dewey will give you plenty!
