COSTS FOR RAISING A FAMILY
Lets you determine the income needed for particular types of families to make ends meet.
Because costs of goods & services vary across the US, the calculator customizes the budgets
for every US community -- over 400 in all. Simply select from 1 of 6 family types, pick a state, &
then select a community to see how much that family is likely to need for housing, food, child
care, etc. It is important to note that the budget comprises only the amounts a family needs to
includes no savings, no restaurant meals, no funds for emergencies -- not even renters'
insurance to protect against fire, flood, or theft. These family budgets are for the year 2004.

Cost of Raising Children
Determine how much of a family's yearly income is spent on the children.

Expenditures on Children by Families
Provides estimates of the cost of raising children from birth to age 17.

Back to School Costs
Lists the average amount of money families will spend on back to school items:  clothes,
shoes, school supplies, electronic / computer equipment, tuition, etc.

Cost of Raising Kids Table
Shows the estimated annual costs of raising a child, based on a survey by the US Department
of Agriculture. Shows Costs based on a family with 2 children on a per-child basis.

Weekly Household Food Spending
Shows the weekly household spending per person in the US.
