National Gallery of Art
The National Gallery houses one of the finest collections in the world illustrating major
achievements in painting, sculpture, decorative arts, & works on paper from the Middle Ages
to the present. Records on all of the more than 110,000 objects & images of more than 6,000
objects in the collection are available online.
Metropolitan Museum of Art - New York
In formation since 1870, the Metropolitan Museum's collection now contains more than two
million works of art from all points of the compass, ancient through modern times. About
6,500 objects -- highlights from each of the Museum's curatorial departments as well as the
entire Department of European Paintings & the entire Department of American Paintings &
Sculpture -- can be accessed online. Users can create their own personalized Met Gallery.
Guggenheim Museum - New York
Currently representing 169 artists, the collection online encompasses both the classic & the
new -- from the Guggenheim's earliest work, an 1867 landscape by Camille Pissarro,
through more recent acquisitions, a 1998-99 sculpture by Robert Gober -- striking a balance
that reflects the dynamic tenor of the institution as a whole. Each work may be viewed at
small, medium, or large resolution, & is accompanied by insightful commentary. The site
also includes additional scholarly & contextual information, such as artist biographies,
definitions of art-historical terms, concepts on art, & suggested readings, all of which form a
searchable database.
National Museum of Mexican Art - Chicago
The National Museum of Mexican Art is the largest Latino culture organization in the country &
the only Latino museum accredited by the American Association of Museums. The museum
if located at 1852 West 19th Street, Chicago, IL 60608 in the Pilsen / Little Village
communities.
Museum of Contemporary Art - Chicago
The Museum of Contemporary Art Collection has 2,345 outstanding examples of visual art
from 1945 to the present with a strong focus on surrealism, minimalism, conceptual
photography, & work by Chicago-based artists.
Louvre Museum - Paris
The Louvre in Paris, France, is the most visited & one of the oldest, largest, & most famous
art galleries & museums in the world. The building was previously a royal palace, & is
famous for holding several of the world's most prestigious works of art, such asLeonardo da
Vinci's Mona Lisa, The Virgin & Child with St. Anne, Madonna of the Rocks & Alexandros of
Antioch's Venus de Milo. The Louvre houses 35,000 works of art drawn from eight
departments, displayed in over 60,000 square meters of exhibition space dedicated to the
permanent collection.
Prado Museum - Madrid
El Prado is a famous museum & art gallery located in Madrid, Spain. It features one of the
world's finest collections of European art, from the 14th century through the early 19th century.
Founded as a museum of paintings & sculpture, the museum also has important collections
of more than 5,000 drawings, 2,000 prints, 1,000 coins & medals, & almost 2,000 decorative
objects & works of art. Sculpture is represented by more than 700 works & by a smaller
number of sculptural fragments. The superb picture gallery consisting of 8,600 paintings is
the factor which lends the museum its world class status.
